What Is the IVF Process Like, Step by Step?

If you’re considering IVF, you might feel overwhelmed by how complex it sounds. Let’s simplify it! Here’s a step-by-step look at what happens during a typical IVF process for couples using their own eggs and sperm.

1. Consultation and Testing

  • Hormone tests (AMH, FSH)

  • Ultrasounds to check ovaries and uterus

  • Semen analysis for male partners

2. Ovarian Stimulation

For about 8–14 days, you’ll take hormone injections to stimulate your ovaries to produce multiple eggs.

  • Frequent monitoring ensures safe stimulation.

  • Expect several ultrasounds and blood tests.

3. Trigger Shot

Once your follicles reach the right size, you’ll take a trigger injection to mature your eggs for retrieval.

4. Egg Retrieval

  • Performed under light sedation.

  • A thin needle retrieves eggs through the vaginal wall.

  • Takes about 10–20 minutes.

  • You may feel crampy afterward.

5. Fertilisation

In the lab:

  • Eggs and sperm are combined (IVF).

  • Or, ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) is used if sperm quality is low.

6. Embryo Culture

Embryos grow in the lab for 3–6 days.

  • Embryologists assess quality daily.

  • Some clinics use time-lapse imaging to monitor development.

7. Embryo Transfer

Usually 1 or 2 healthy embryos are transferred into the uterus.

  • Quick and painless, like a pap smear.

  • Fresh or frozen embryos can be used.

8. The Two-Week Wait

The hardest part!

  • Avoid early home tests.

  • A blood pregnancy test confirms success.

Pregnancy Test Day

If positive—congratulations! Your clinic will monitor early pregnancy with ultrasounds. If not, your doctor will discuss next steps.

Bottom Line: IVF may sound intimidating, but your clinic team guides you every step of the way. Knowledge helps replace fear with confidence!
